Scott Woerner (left), Pat Hodgson with the Flea Flicker Pass painting (center), and George Patton (right) will all be attending the Celebrity Golf Tournament at The Georgia Club Saturday, July 31
Pop Warner, Fran Tarkenton, Buck Belue, Herschel Walker, Terry Hoage and other University of Georgia football greats are all “hanging out” at The Georgia Club this week in preparation of The Georgia Club Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Tournament & Auction this Saturday. These players and others are all part of an art exhibit featuring more than 25 scenes as depicted in Vince Dooley’s book “Dooley’s Playbook: The 34 Most Memorable Plays in Georgia Football History.” The art is painted by well-known international artist Steve Penley, who is a UGA graduate.
While some of the football greats hanging out are doing so just in one-dimension, others will be there in person on Saturday, July 31, as just a few of the celebrities playing with the golf foursomes. Scott Woerner (Scott Woerner versus Clemson University), Andy Johnson (Andy Johnson versus University of Tennessee) and George Patton (George Patton versus University of Alabama) will all be on hand playing. Even The Georgia Club’s own resident celebrity, Pat Hodgson (Kirby Moore to Pat Hodgson to Bob Taylor versus University of Alabama) will be on hand greeting the golfers.
In addition to oils of single football players, several collages are also included in the exhibit including memorable plays such as Buck Belue’s pass to Lindsay Scott during the 1980 game versus the University of Florida and a collage of notable UGA kickers.
The Celebrity Golf Tournament is a fundraiser of The Georgia Club Foundation and raises money through the tournament, a live and silent auction, and the Yoculan Ball Drop (named for Master of Ceremonies, former UGA Gymnastics Coach Suzanne Yoculan). All proceeds go to the Foundation and the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Last year’s tournament raised more than $15,000 for the Food Bank and this year’s tournament is expected to exceed that amount. Steve Penley has painted a commissioned floral, too, that will be sold during the live auction.
Other celebrities expected to attend the Celebrity Golf Tournament and Auction include Matt Stinchcomb, Kelley Hester, David Chandley, O’Neill Williams and Morten Anderson just to name a few.
The art exhibit can be viewed in The Georgia Club’s Lobby, Board Room and Lounge now through Sunday, August 1 from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. daily. There is no charge to view the exhibit. All of the original works of art are available for purchase.
For more information about the art exhibit or The Celebrity Golf Tournament, please visit www.TheGeorgiaClubFoundation.com or call 770-725-8100.
A beautiful floral arrangement painted by Steve Penley will be auctioned off at the Celebrity Golf Tournament Saturday.
Steve Penley is a celebrated, nationally-renowned artist. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and studies at the school of the Visual Arts in New York. His work is widely shown and collected internationally. He lives in Carrollton, GA. For more details, please visit www.StevePenley.com.

2009 Celebrity Ray Goff Tees Off For A Cause!
Every golfer swings with a target in mind. When that target is to raise money for a charitable organization, the flag at the end of the green doesn’t seem so far away when the target changes to a new goal of making a difference in the lives of thousands affected by the charity benefiting tournament.
Charity golf tournaments can do much more than just call attention to organizations in need. Charity tournaments can raise serious cash! This past May, the Stadion Athens Classic at UGA raised approximately $88,000, which went to dozens of non-profits. Coming up on Monday, July 12, the Sixth Annual Bulldogs Battling Breast Cancer golf tournament will help raise money and awareness for breast cancer.
The Georgia Club Foundation created a golf tournament in 2008 to raise money for the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and the then up-and-coming Foundation. The Georgia Club Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament has since grown into a spectacular event, featuring activities such as live and silent auctions, a luncheon, raffle drawings and an aerial ball drop. All proceeds from the day benefit the Food Bank and Foundation.
The 2009 tournament raised over $30,000! With the additions of a lunch and auction in this tournament, the total money raised in the 2009 event tripled the amount raised in the inaugural tournament.
The Third Annual Celebrity Golf Tournament & Auction, featuring Master of Ceremonies, retired UGA Gym Dogs Coach Suzanne Yoculan, is set for Saturday, July 31, 2010! The golf tournament will feature sports and entertainment figures from Georgia, and will be followed by a lunch and auction. The tournament fee is $200 per person or $800 per team. The cost for lunch is $20. The doors will open at 3:00 for all to join, free of charge, to participate in the auction and Yoculan Ball Drop.
All proceeds from the day will again benefit the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia and The Georgia Club Foundation. To register for the golf tournament, please call 770-725-8101. To purchase a lunch ticket, please call 770-725-8107.

Tomorrow is the Fourth Annual Front Porch Foot Race and we wanted to take a quick look at this amazing event! Runners from all over the community hit the streets of The Georgia Club for a scenic race to raise money for local community organizations. The event is composed of two races, a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk and a 5k competitive race. Crowds gather for “Porch Parties” throughout the neighborhood to cheer on the racers.
This race continues to grow, with last year’s event bringing in nearly225 runners and walkers. Over 40 volunteers help coordinate registration and monitor the race route. This truly is a neighborhood event that unites the entire community, from the racers who travel to The Georgia Club to the event beneficiaries. The race will raise money for the Barrow County Schools Special Needs Program and the Athens Nurses Clinic.
The Front Porch Foot Race is the third largest event of The Georgia Club Foundation. To find out more about the Foundation and how you can help the community, visit http://www.thegeorgiaclub.com/foundation-georgia-club.asp.
After the race, stick around for a special poolside dinner! For dinner reservations, call 770-725-8100 .
Go ahead and put on your running shoes and we will see you tomorrow!
The registration fee is $20 or $12 without a shirt. Last minute entries are not guaranteed a t-shirt. Walk-up registration is available or you can register online.
